Famous for the great outdoors
Staunton is most famous for its forest trails, and you’ll find abundant footpaths from the house. This includes the Wysis Way, an 88km route, and in the other direction, local loops around Stowfield Quarry. With bikes, it’s easy to access Symonds Yat and the rest of the Forest of Dean, including the popular Pedalabikeaway MTB centre at Cannop.
The Wye Valley AONB is an outdoor-lovers’ dream, popular not just with bikers but climbers, walkers and canoeists, too. Meanwhile, the Brecon Beacons and Bike Park Wales are less than 45-minutes away.
Whatever your chosen activity, you’ll find plenty of recommendations in the guest book.
Cosy inns and buzzing communities
You’ll find Staunton to be a welcoming village with one of the best foodie pubs in the area. The White Horse is 5* reviewed on Trip Advisor and stands out for its ambiance and amazing main dishes and delicious vegetarian fayre.
The Ostrich in Newland and Tudor Farmhouse in Clearwell – just a short drive – are also highly rated for food. Down in Redbrook, The Boat and The Bell are known for regular live music nights. The Boat enjoys a stunning riverside setting and great ale selection.
Historic Wye
The historic market town of Monmouth is just a few minutes’ drive. It offers two theatres and a bustling high street with many unique and independent shops, together with Saturday street markets. There are several good supermarkets (Lidl, Waitrose, M&S) and a leisure centre.
In the other direction, picturesque Tintern is well worth a visit for its impressive Abbey, crafts centre and Old Station. Discover the Wye’s industrial past as a major hub for metal working, forges and mills.
